We are fortunate to live in a day and age where our favorite music is more accessible to us than ever. In days gone by, the radio was the only way that we could access our favorite tunes and even then, we could not always hear what we wanted, when we wanted it. Because of this, radio is now becoming less popular, and portable audio and media devices are becoming our generations’ means of listening to music. Today, the iPod has revolutionized the way in which we listen to music, and is the most popular form of audio players that are on the market. Almost everybody now owns an ipod, and with the features of large memory capacities, digital audio, and extensive libraries of music, more people are using iPods for listening to music than any other device, particularly the radio. Though iPods offer many advantages when it comes to portable radios, the one disadvantage is that we are not able to listen or use them effectively while we are driving. It is against the law to listen to music with headphones on in your car, which make the iPod useless when we are driving, which for many of us, is when we most often listen to music.

Learn Satellite Radio
Satellite radio is actually composed of two Boeing HS 702 satellites orbiting our atmosphere and aptly named Rock and Roll. One is located at approximately 85 degrees west longitude and the other at 115 degrees west longitude. Geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) is about 22,223 miles (35,764 km) above Earth, and is the type of orbit most commonly used for communications satellites. The first satellite to up, Rock, was placed in orbit on March 18, 2001. Roll followed with its launch on May 8. Satellite radio has a third HS-702 satellite on the ground ready to be launched in case one of the two orbiting satellites break down or fail.
Satellite radios station on earth transmits a signal to its two GEO Satellites, which bounce signals back down to the ground. The radio receivers are programmed to receive and unscramble the digital data signal, which contains up to 100 channels of digital audio. In addition to the encoded sound, the signal contains additional information about the broadcast. The artist, song title and category of music are all displayed on the radio. In urban areas, where buildings can block out the satellites signal, broadcasting equipment is supplemented by ground transmitters.
Each receiver contains a unique manufacturers chipset. Satellite radio began delivering chipsets to its manufacturing partners in late September or early October of 2000. The chipset consists of two custom integrated circuits designed by STMicroelectronics. Satellite has partnered with Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, Delphi Delco, Sony and Motorola to manufacture satellite capable car radios. Each radio receiver uses a tiny, car-phone-sized antenna to receive the digital signal. GM has invested about 100 million dollars in digital satellite radio, and Honda has also created a contract to use these same radios in its cars. General Motors first began installing satellite radio receivers in specific models in late 2000 and early 2001.
For approximately twelve dollars per month, subscribers can listen to crystal clear digital sound. For this small price, music aficionados receive up to 100 channels of music, talk and news. They can also listen online via streaming audio service with over 70 channels. Most of the stations received are commercial-free, with none of the channels having more than seven minutes of ads per hour. Satellite advertisers include USA Today, BBC, CNN-Sports Illustrated and The Weather Channel. The service is clean, clear and more of what the surveyed population asked for. The future of satellite radio is clearly bright.

How Radio Controlled Car Racing Came About
It was in the 1940s when diminutive, nitro-methane powered engines were first marketed. They had a speed that can reach of up to 113 km/h but can only run in circles from a tether. It was there that it got its nicknames of “spin dizzies” and “tether cars”.
During the 1960s, the first miniature cars that could be controlled via radio from a distant transmitter were introduced. These new model cars had the power to steer, accelerate, and brake at the driver’s will. These cars are capable of running through racetracks with accurate control, and thus, radio controlled car racing was born.
In 1984, radio controlled car manufacturer Associated Electrics, Inc. introduced a classier and sleeker version of model race car called the RC10. The RC10 was electric powered; unlike the common cars that were nitromethane-driven. It was a deviation from Associated Electrics usual line of RC’s. RC10 was made from a more powerful aluminum alloy and it had built in shock absorbers that were adjustable.
Aside from its new electric capacities, the RC10 model had the option to incorporate small ball bearings made of stainless steel into its wheels and transmission. Also, its transmission had steel rings forced down on the ball bearings, a feature enabling full modification for any track situation. Without question, RC10’s abilities made it the top choice in electric RC racing.
In 1986, another RC manufacturer, Schumacher Racing Products, launched their Competition All Terrain (CAT) model car. It is a four wheel “buggy” racer that was considered as the greatest of its class. It went on to win the 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, and 1996 world championship off-road race. This model car was recognized as initiating and popularizing the interest in four wheel car racing.
Team Losi, a popular radio controlled car racing team, released their JRX-2 model buggy and immediately began a rivalry with Team Associated that survives until today. Both teams headline the American radio controlled car racing scene, with Gil Losi, Jr. acting as the formers’ founder and leader. Team Losi was the first to produce miniature tires that were all natural, the first four wheel “buggy” that was American-made , and a new set of car types that were 1/18 scale of the Mini-T.
Outside of the American RC racing circuit, other makers like the Kyosho (Japan) and Schumacher (Europe) hold much market share both in innovation and technology. They are the prevalent choice of makers for hobbyists in their respective regions.
