Description:

EdDirect was created to share my thoughts on current trends and issues in education. Also, the intent of this blog is to share pictures taken during my trips all over the world. I hope you find the information posted on this blog informative, relevant, interesting, and most of all useful.

Contents:

Key Issue # 2: Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Issue: The law targets collectivities rather than individuals.

Key Components to Solutions

1- Make specific accommodations for larger districts with diverse student
population, so the law’s provisions do not penalize the districts.
2-Administer a different assessment or measure different goals to ESE and English Language Learners.

Key Issue # 1: Ensuring that all teachers are “highly qualified”
Issue:

Demographic disparities in the composition of the teaching force and their negative impact on the quality of education for all children. More children of color fail to reach their potential and as fewer teachers of color join and remain in the education community.

Key Components to Solutions:

1- Infuse the issues of teacher diversity and cultural competence into the NCLB debate, at both state and national levels, with the same vigor and frequency as the issue of teacher quality.
2- Identifying and eliminating obstacles to expanding the pool of prospective teachers and to increasing the cultural competence of all teachers.
3- Demanding that significantly greater resources be targeted to the recruitment, preparation, and support of a teaching cadre that is fully qualified, ethnically diverse, and culturally competent.
4- Creating a truly qualified, diverse teacher workforce that meets the needs and potential of all public school students.
5- Promote strategies for increased retention of diverse teachers.
6- Encourage the District to use responsible recruitment strategies to increase the number of faculty of color in our schools.

Diversity
From early years, this nation has been multicultural, and people from all over the world has contributed significantly to every aspect of its life. Therefore, the U.S. depends on its schools to help eradicate racism, to preserve cultural heritages, to protect language rights, and to promote social equality and justice through the recognition of individual differences.

Schools Must Be Accountable
I deeply believe that the continuous dialogue within a school community, which is part of the accountability process, is the key factor that it is helping to create a positive culture throughout the Public School System. Also, the fact that school principals are monitoring the everyday works of teachers it helping to build a positive school culture. In addition, this constant monitoring is leading to increase teacher satisfaction and productivity.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB)/SES

Supplemental Educational Services (SES) is one of the parent choices under NCLB. SES refers to free extra academic help, such as tutoring or remedial help, that is provided to students in reading, language arts, and math. This extra help can be provided before or after school, on weekends, during Winter/Spring Breaks, or in the summer.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER IMPROVEMENT OF SES:

I strongly believe that the implementation of SES has to be regulated at the Federal, State and District levels by putting into action the following recommendations:

1- All students who do not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) need to be afforded the opportunity for tutorial services (under the law, only students on free and reduced price meals are eligible to receive services).

2- Schools should be allowed to offer tutoring services that are based on state standards.

3- Teachers who provide these services should come from either classrooms where students have improved or schools in the district where success has been obtained.

4- Consistent/generic pre and post testing must be implemented to show student growth. All SES Providers should be responsible for implementing the same assessment tool district-wide.

5- All tutors delivering tutoring services should be highly qualified.

6- Recruitment by Providers should be regulated.
