Sims, White, Stafford, Johnson Practice With Lions
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson practiced today as the Lions worked out for the first time since the Thanksgiving game against Green Bay.
Stafford played through a left shoulder injury against the Packers. Johnson played through knee and hand injuries. Both should play Sunday at Cincinnati.
“Neither guy was 100%, but both of them came out and both of them were able to get on the practice field today,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “I’m optimistic both of them would be without limitation on Sunday – at this time of the year, about as full speed as you can be. Everybody’s banged up and beat up a little bit.”
Defensive end Dewayne White (toe) and linebacker Ernie Sims (hamstring) also practiced. But safety Kalvin Pearson (hamstring) and offensive lineman Daniel Loper (back) did not.

Lions and Brandon Pettigrew want more
Brandon Pettigrew concedes he hasn’t lived up to the expectations that come with being the 20th selection in the draft — not yet.
The Lions could use more.
Pettigrew has 14 catches for 169 yards with no touchdowns through seven games. Those aren’t terrible numbers, but surely not the numbers expected from the first tight end taken in the draft and a player who has started every game this season.
Those numbers look a bit shoddier considering the tight end position has become more involved in the passing game.
In 2009, tight ends are on pace to set the season record for the most receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches for the position. Through Week 8, tight ends have totaled 1,018 receptions, 11,280 receiving yards and 87 touchdown receptions.

Lions’ Stafford practices for 2nd day in row
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for the second straight day today — a good sign, considering he couldn’t practice after he last tested his injured right knee two weeks ago. He was listed officially as limited.
The Lions will continue to monitor Stafford’s progress day to day before deciding whether he will play Sunday against St. Louis. Stafford, who has missed the last two games, declined to comment.
“We’ll wait and see,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “There’s still a long way to go until Sunday, and there’s a lot of hurdles we need to cross before then.”
Wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who has missed one game with an injured right knee, did not practice for the second straight day. But he worked out on his own and said he was still optimistic he could play. He does not need a full week of practice.

Injuries turn Lions practice into a walkthrough
Injuries have hit the Lions worse than most teams around the NFL. It’s gotten so bad that it’s becoming hard just to find enough bodies for practice.
“I had initially scheduled practice for (today), but I think we’re going to have an hour-and-a-half walkthrough instead, because I don’t think we are going to be in the position where we can have enough bodies on the practice field to actually do a practice,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.
The Lions were down six starters in their loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. In all, the Lions have placed five players on injured reserve and had 12 players that missed or were limited in practice last week.
Defensive end Copeland Bryan (sprained MCL) and Daunte Culpepper (hamstring) were added to the list of injured Lions this weekend in Green Bay. The most serious injuries continue to be those to rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford (knee) and receiver Calvin Johnson (knee), but Schwartz said there was a possibility they could both play against the St. Louis Rams after the bye week.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn’t been told his season’s in jeopardy
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said Monday that no one is telling him his season is in jeopardy, despite a report that the team is worried he might need knee surgery.
Stafford suffered a right knee injury – reportedly a partially dislocated kneecap – Oct. 4 at Chicago. He has missed the past two games.
He went through a limited practice Wednesday. He said afterward that the main concern was swelling and whether he would be able to practice again the next day, and he did not practice the next day.
ESPN reported Sunday that Stafford had swelling and the Lions ordered a new MRI, which they forwarded to Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., fearing Stafford might need surgery. General manager Martin Mayhew dismissed that report as “gossip,” and Stafford said he was not worried about surgery.
